AMERICAN ART, FRENCH-SPEAKING THOUGHTS
It shows how art in the United States has catalyzed the revolutionary energies of thinkers, activists, and poets who have transgressed genres and profoundly changed perspectives on today’s world, from Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Derrida to Frantz Fanon, Jean Genet, Aimé Césaire, Jacques Lacan, Monique Wittig, Pierre Bourdieu, and Edouard Glissant. Reading their work in the United States allowed their ideas to be translated into unexpected forms and created tools for a critical view of institutions, both artistic and societal. Theory here is an instrument for challenging social, aesthetic, and linguistic norms, opening up new ways of seeing and acting in the world.
